LASIK or Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK is one of the accurate, effective and safe way of surgery to correct your vision. Technically LASIK or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis is a type of refractive surgery very commonly used nowadays to correct myopia, hyperemia, and astigmatism. This is considered as a breakthrough in opthalmology compared to the conventional Photo Refractive Ratectomy (PRK) method.

LASIK has several advantages over similar procedures. It is relatively painless and good vision is usually achieved by the very next day. Both nearsighted and farsighted people can benefit from the LASIK procedure. With nearsighted people, the goal is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired.

Who is eligible for Lasik?
Eligibility for LASIK surgery depends on the amount of refractive error, the curvature and thickness of the cornea and a number of other factors that an ophthalmologist must evaluate. The person should be at least 18 years of age and should not have a significant increase in the prescribed power of spectacles in the previous one year or with specified report of Myopia, Hypermetropia or astigmatism. Pregnant However pregnant women may not be suitable candidates.
Prior to surgery the candidate will have to undergo certain pre operative tests like Refraction, Corneal topography, corneal Pachymetry, Keratometry, Slit lamp test, tonometry and retinal check up.

How LASIK is done?
To perform a LASIK eye surgery an instrument called a microkeratome is used to create a thin, circular flap in the cornea. The surgeon folds the flap back out of the way, then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. The excimer laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to precisely remove very tiny bits of tissue from the cornea to reshape it. When the cornea is reshaped properly, it works better to focus light into the eye and onto the retina, providing clearer vision than before. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.

How is C - lasik (Wave front Lasik) better than simple lasik laser?
Lasik laser can correct the vision to normal (6/6 without glasses) in the absence of any other eye pathology. But with C - Lasik, it is now possible to find a quality of vision, which shall be even better than what is achievable with simple Lasik laser.

Care after Lasik Surgery?
Your eye or eyes (if both are treated) will likely be quite blurry immediately after your LASIK surgery. There is absolutely no need to worry as this is quite natural and expected. You will likely awaken the next morning after your LASIK surgery with much improved vision. Your vision should also improve over the fortnight following the surgery.
